Max-Günther Schrank (November 19, 1898 – September 22, 1960) was a German army officer who served during the Second World War, reaching the rank of Oberst (Colonel). Military Role: Commanded the 1st Battalion of Gebirgsjäger Regiment 100 (mountain troops). Led operations as part of German airborne and mountain forces. Notable Achievement: Awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on July 17, 1941 (as an Oberstleutnant). Recognized for his leadership during the Battle of Crete. Played a key role in encircling and capturing Allied (primarily British) forces in southern Crete, contributing significantly to the German victory on the island. Citation for the Knight’s Cross… “Oberstleutnant Schrank has especially distinguished himself by his personal bravery and decisiveness. Through the encirclement and capture of the elusive enemy forces in the south of Crete on the 01.06.1941, the operations on the island could be brought to a successful conclusion. Schrank has secured a decisive share in the total victory over the English troops.”
