One of several portraits requested by a Hitler Jugend boy, and officially sent to him – see image of reverse. Hans Philipp (March 17, 1917 – October 8, 1943) was a leading German fighter ace during the Second World War. Background & Career: Joined the Luftwaffe in 1936 and became a fighter pilot after flight training. Served with units including Jagdgeschwader 54 and later commanded Jagdgeschwader 1. Took part in major campaigns: Poland, France, the Battle of Britain, Balkans, and the Eastern Front. Combat Record: Flew over 500 combat missions. Credited with 206 aerial victories: Majority on the Eastern Front 29 on the Western Front Among the earliest pilots to reach major milestones: 100 victories (1942) 150 victories (1943) Over 200 victories, briefly becoming Germany’s top-scoring ace at the time Awards & Recognition: Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross (1940) Oak Leaves (1941) Swords (1942) Later Career & Death: Promoted to Oberstleutnant (Lieutenant Colonel) and appointed wing commander of JG 1 in 1943.
